Black Women Who Brunch is a networking and support group of African-American female writers in the entertainment industry founded by award-winning writers Lena Waithe, Erika L. Johnson, and Nkechi Okoro Carroll.
Although the group began with only 12 members in 2014, its membership has exponentially grown and now Black Women Who Brunch has almost 80 distinguished female writers of color that gather throughout the year to discuss their challenges and celebrate their recent successes. “It’s not just a community we’re building, but a resource. We really are able to recommend eight or nine black women for certain jobs.” Waithe said.
In 2017, Waithe made history as the first black woman to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for her writing on Master of None. The group is full of accomplished black women writers like Waithe! Co-founder, Erika L. Johnson, has served as a writer for Queen Sugar, Being Mary Jane, Ugly Betty, and The Village.
